Conservation and Environmental Education for
Sarus Crane and Local Communities
Cambodia
Activity Reports
Overview
Two sites, namely Boeng Prek Lapouv (BPL) and Anlung Pring (AP) protected landscapes was selected
as the project sites. The unique wetlands are located in lower Mekong delta where part of the Greater
Mekong region and support the significant population of globally threatened Sarus Crane (Antigone
antigone) during the non-breading season. According to an ecosystem service assessment, these two
wetlands provide fishery resources, especially fish in value at least 1.5 million US dollar per year.
However since 2000, the major parts of these wetlands were converted to paddy field and commercial
shrimp farm.
Rice farmers cause impacts on the wetlands function directly through more chemical fertilizer and
pesticide use. Moreover due to overuse of water during the dry season for rice production in BPL, the
site is dried up quicker. It is one of the key reasons to cause negative impacts on Sarus Crane’s foraging
habitats. As a part of our efforts to stop habitat loss and maintain the values of this wetland, we are
going to conduct community-based ecotourism, capacity building and environmental education for local community.
